Three Lifesavers from Loughborough Students Lifesaving Club attended the German Cup in November 2017 - read the article below to find out how they got on...

Last weekend (Thursday 24th- Sunday 26th November) Loughborough Students Lifesaving Club saw three of our members attend the German Cup in Warendorf.

Current members James Blaby and Lea Donovan, along with alumni member Siobhan Casey took Germany by storm, smashing a total of four University Records and a new British Record (1.29.01) in the Female Manikin Relay by Lea and Siobhan (along with Zara Williams and Sinead Gourley).

James, with this being his second international competition, after attending the Lifesaving Commonwealth Festival for Team England in Durban, South Africa, was in great shape going into the competition after training very hard since South Africa.

He showed this by securing three British University Records in the 200m Obs, 100m Rescue Medley and 200m Super Lifesaver – in which he was only one second away from securing the British Record! Along with these three Personal Bests (PBs) he secured another PB in the 100m Tow event.  James said he was both surprised and extremely pleased with his performance and is happy his hard work in training is paying off.

For Lea, this was her debut international performance for GBR and she performed extremely well. She saw PBs in four out of five of her events, one of which (100m Rescue Medley) she also secured the Female British University Record. She was also one team member contributing to the Female Manikin Relay who achieved a British Record! She claimed it was both an amazing an eye-opening experience to compete against such tough competition from around the world, but concluded that overall she was pleased to have achieved everything she did at the competition.

Siobhan, has previously competed internationally and has been in the GBR Performance Squad for two years running now after being new to the sport only just before National Speeds in 2016. She competed at the German Cup last year and went onto do well again this year! Like Lea, Siobhan was also part of the massively successful Female Manakin Relay team! Siobhan expressed that it was great to compete for GBR again, and against some brilliant international competition; some of the best swimmers from around the world. She stated her highlight was breaking the British Record with the girls!

As a Lifesaving Club, we here at Loughborough are very proud of all three of our talented athletes! We are also looking forward to National Speeds where we hope to take a big team to Glasgow to compete and see more success stories such as these. We’re training hard in preparation and looking forward to all of the BULSCA League competitions beforehand too.
