The University of Birmingham Lifesaving Club prides itself as being a second family and home for its members. As a student run club we are open to all new members, whether you have years of experience or have never stepped foot in a pool. We have a dedicated team of coaches with a range of experience who can cater to all needs.
Some of our achievements as a club include finishing 2nd at the National Championships in 2015, 1st in 2016 and 2nd from 2017 onwards, as well as coming top three in the A league for as many years as we can remember and finishing top two in the B league since 2013.
We train around five times a week, including two swim-sets, as well as dry and wet first-aid sessions twice a week and a separate Strength and Conditioning session at Second City Fitness, with incredibly friendly and welcoming coaches to improve strength and mobility outside of the water. Our sessions are all tailored to the abilities of our club members and there is always room for complete beginners or experienced lifesavers, as we cover all aspects of lifesaving year on year to maintain our confidence and skills within the sport. With our overall goal for training to be as fun and enjoyable as it can be, while also training our members be the best that they can be in competition performances.
Further to this, we have a qualified Trainer Assessor within the club who can deliver NPLQ courses at a discounted price for club members to develop skills for the real-world further. This will enable people to become qualified lifeguards that can work in swimming pools throughout the country. As well as the opportunity to take part in a Survive and Save Award, which can be progressed further to gold standard through qualified coaches.
What makes our club particularly unique is the social aspect that comes with being a member; with regular weekly socials that include Sports Nights at the Guild or sober socials where we go out for meals, bowling, cinema trips and even theme parks. With an incredibly inclusive environment throughout the entire club, whether you’re a member of the committee and training team or not, there is always a safe and friendly environment for you at Birmingham.
We all look forward to welcoming some new faces to our club in the next academic year. With free Taster Sessions offered at the start of term, where you can give Lifesaving a go and see if you enjoy it and the welcoming environment that we can offer as a University Sports Team.
Keep an eye on our social media platforms @ublifesaving on Facebook and Instagram for key dates and information for joining the club and those crucial taster sessions. If you have any further questions, please don’t hesitate to contact us!
