Plymouth Surf Lifesaving is a medium size club that has a good time while learning lifesaving skills. We’re a close and friendly community that host a range of activities from scheduled training two times a week, to our infamous beach weekends.
Our regular sessions are on Monday and Thursday. Our Monday session focuses on fitness while our Thursday sessions practice lifesaving skills, such as rope throw, tows, and incidents. We’re also trying to set up a sea swimming session to help members build their confidence in the sea. The activity we look forward to the most (apart from attending competitions) is our beach weekends/ days. We play games such as beach flags and have races in and out of the sea, while also scratching up on our first aid and sea swimming abilities.
Every year we have club members who have taken part in the NPLQ course. As a lifesaving club we can help get discounts on the price of this training, and it’s an easy way to become a lifeguard as we have an 100% pass rate.
A club wouldn’t be a club without socials. And we really know how to have a good time. A night out with your club can create long lasting memories and strengthen the club as whole. This is also when we can get to know other lifesaving clubs across the country, for after competitions we all get together for a social. We’re also going to try and diversify our socials this year to include more sober socials.
We also train for competitions, taking a minimum of two teams each time. It’s not mandatory, but we go to push ourselves and develop our skills. It’s such a good environment to be in and the club will have your back no matter what.
This year, we were especially proud of our results in rope throw during the 2020 BULSCA Championships in Bristol. We earned a silver medal in the woman’s team rope throw and won the gold medal in the woman’s individual rope throw, setting a BULSCA record.
